Taking a road trip is the quintessential traveler experience. There's nothing between you and the open road, and you're free to stop whenever and wherever you like. The popularity of van life has recently skyrocketed through social media like Instagram and Tiktok. Everyone wants to try their hand at being a digital nomad, even if it's only for a while!

Forking out the cash to purchase an RV or van can put a serious dent in any travel plans. Traditional and peer-to-peer car rental sites often have limited styles and availability, not to mention they can cost a fortune. That's where Campanda comes in to help bridge this gap by providing more affordable rental RVs, camper vans, and trailers in many countries worldwide.

Is renting an RV with Campanda the right way to go for your next trip? And just how reliable is the platform and the vehicles? Find out everything you need to know about Campanda and if it's worth trying!

What is Campanda?

Campanda is an RV and van rental company based in Germany. It works peer-to-peer, similar to the Australian-based Wicked Campers and RVshare

This platform offers a wide range of vehicles, including RVs, trailers, sprinter vans, and vehicles with rooftop tents. The type of vehicle and availability can depend a lot on the city you're starting your journey in.

Where is Campanda available?

Campanda is currently available in 33 countries across 5 continents, mainly in the USA and Europe. You can search for your city on the home page to see if Campanda is available in your country or state.

Renting an RV is one of the best ways to make planning a driving trip easy and is the perfect way to check many bucket list items off along the way. Ever wanted to go to Burning Man and cruise the Oregon coast on the same trip? Now you can!

How does Campanda work?

  1. Sign up and create a profile for yourself when first using the site.
  2. Once you've made a profile, search for a city you want to visit and your chosen dates.
  3. Browse hundreds of travel-ready vehicles and filter by vehicle types, distance, and facilities available.
  4. When selecting your ideal van, click "inquire now" and fill in your details.
  5. Your inquiry will be submitted to the owner, who can approve or deny your request.
  6. Remember that some vehicles are available for instant bookings, while others aren't.

Is Campanda free?

Campanda is free to use, although there may be extra charges for different services available for the vehicles, like additional kilometers, deep cleanings, or pets.

Can I bring the vehicle across borders?

Planning the ultimate road trip the old-fashioned way or with a handy app like Roadtrippers might involve crossing some borders, especially if you're in Europe.

Since the vehicles are individually owned, it's up to each owner to allow renters to take their vehicle into another country. You can find this information under restrictions or conditions on the vehicle details page.

How are the vehicles insured?

With hundreds of vehicles on the platform in various countries, insurance policies can vary greatly. Always check the conditions section to see what kind of insurance each vehicle has.

Unlike Turo, a competing peer-to-peer vehicle rental company, insurance isn't covered by Companda, and travelers should take all necessary precautions by purchasing the best travel insurance.

What if there is a breakdown or accident?

It's important to talk to the owner before taking the keys to clarify what to do in case of a breakdown or accident. Most owners will prefer you also contact them after speaking with the necessary authorities or medical personnel. So, keep the owner's contact information handy in the glove box or your notes app.

What driver's license do I need?

Depending on the vehicle's size and weight, you might need a different license class. You can check with the transportation authority in your country to see what kind of license you would need to drive an RV or van. In the UK, you need a category B or C1 to drive heavy vehicles. Whereas in the US, you might need to take an RV safety course.

If you're planning on crossing borders with your rental or renting in another country other than your own, make sure to contact the local transportation authority to see if you need an international license or special classification to drive an RV.

Campanda cancellation policy

The cancellation policy for each vehicle depends on the individual owner. So, to find out each vehicle's cancellation policy, you can check the terms and conditions under each listing.

Campanda vs. RVshare vs. Wicked Campers

Campanda

  • Available in many cities and countries worldwide
  • Has multiple styles of vehicles
  • Owners and renters organize their own insurance
  • Doesn't provide roadside assistance

RVshare

  • Vehicles are only available in the US
  • Has multiple kinds of vehicles
  • Standard insurance policy for customers
  • Provides roadside assistance

Wicked Campers

  • Available in 3 North American cities and Australia only.
  • Specializes in 3 different types of vehicles only
  • Standard insurance policy for customers
  • Provides roadside assistance

Benefits of Campanda

Campanda offers a wide range of vehicles to fit every traveler's needs. They have you covered, from couples to families with pets to solo travelers!

Although the cancellation policy and insurance are in the hands of the driver and renter to sort out, that can work to some people's benefit. Doing it this way might be better than conventional blanket insurance and cancellation policy.

Being a peer-to-peer rental service has its benefits. Some owners may offer unlimited mileage on their vehicles, whereas other similar services have strict mileage rules. Campanda also has RVs and vans available in many countries, the US and Australia, and is affordable compared to its competitors.

Drawbacks of Campanda

Unfortunately, it might be too risky for some renters to rely on personal insurance policies. They are at greater risk, especially if they're new to driving an RV.

Having to deal with the booking request system the website works off of can be irritating and time-consuming. Plus, each owner's individual cancellation policy can make putting in multiple booking requests confusing.

Is Campanda worth it?

Campanda can give you the unique opportunity to experience van life that some travelers might not get to, and it's an excellent service to use when booking an RV. They have a wide selection of vehicles to entice any traveler, and they even offer pet-friendly vehicles!

Although, when you're booking a vehicle, the insurance policies and coverage can be confusing. Using this service might be difficult for new and young drivers. And unlike similar services, the company doesn't offer roadside assistance in case of a flat tire or accident.

More vehicles are also available in Europe compared to the US and Canada, making it challenging for non-EU citizens to rent abroad. Even though there are some downsides to using the site, overall, it's a handy option for those with plenty of driving experience or experience with RVs.

Our Rating: 4.2/5

Pros:

  • Extensive inventory
  • Available in many countries
  • Unique vehicles
  • Potential flexible cancellation policy

Cons:

  • Too risky for some travelers
  • Request system can be slow and frustrating
  • No roadside assistance or other perks
