Mexico is an incredible country with some of the planet's most beautiful beaches, cities, culture, and food! But before you book your flight and a stay at a hostel, you'll undoubtedly want to know what this gorgeous country is known for, so let's find out!

Located in North America just south of the United States, Mexico is one of the most visited countries in the world. In fact, 20 million international tourists checked Mexico off their list in 2021!

Whether you're on a budget, want to splash out on a luxurious vacation, have months to travel, or are only heading over for a few days, you'll find exactly what you're looking for in Mexico.

And now it's time to learn about everything Mexico's famous for so you can book flights, pack your bags, and get excited about the adventure!

What Is Mexico Famous For?

The first thing you'll need to understand about Mexico is that it's HUGE! Mexico spans 761,610 square miles, making it the 13th largest country in the world.

Because of its size, many areas of the country are quite different from others, much like the USA or Europe.

So while you're about to learn a bit about everything that Mexico is famous for right now, you should also know that depending on where you plan to be, you may find different attractions, culture, art, and even food.

Mexico is known for its unique cuisine, fabulous beaches, high-energy cities, art, ancient archeology, wild nightlife, and vibrant culture.

1. Food & Drink - Mexican Cuisine

Mexican food may be my favorite international cuisine ever, and I'm definitely not alone. Mexican food is so popular and famous that it even has its own UNESCO status, as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity!

Even if you haven't been to Mexico, you've probably tried some of its famous dishes, such as tacos, chilaquiles, burritos, enchiladas, or quesadillas, as they have become famous all over the world.

But as anyone who has been to Mexico can tell you, the food hits differently when you're there. Made authentically, Mexican food is full of crazy amazing flavors, and the best part? The food's also crazy cheap! Delicious and budget-friendly? Count me in!

When you get there, try tacos el pastor and elote at a street food stand!

And it doesn't stop at food! Mexico also has some outstanding local beverages to offer, including horchata, margaritas, and, of course, Corona.

Another fun fact is that even coca-cola is more delicious in Mexico. It's called Mexican Coke, made with sugar cane instead of sugar, making it much more addictive.

2. White Sandy Beaches - Cabo, Tulum, Cancún

From Tulum to Cabo San Lucas, Cancún, and Puerto Vallarta, there are almost too many Mexican beaches to add to your itinerary.

Each one offers a unique energy and culture, but they're all equally beautiful!

When choosing one or several Mexican beaches to visit, your budget is one of the most important aspects you'll want to assess. Some beaches, such as Cabo San Lucas and Cancun, are seriously expensive. In contrast, others, such as Mazunte and Puerto Escondido, are ideal for backpackers.

You may also want to note where they are located. Beaches on the country's west coast or the Caribbean will be hotter and better for snorkeling or scuba diving. Still, those on the Pacific Ocean are the surfing hot spots.

3. Cities - Mexico City, Sayulita, Oaxaca!

Though you may be tempted to spend all your time at the beach, you should take advantage of visiting the beautiful Mexican cities!

If you have time, you should try to hit as many of these awe-inspiring cities as you can:

  • Oaxaca
  • Mexico City
  • Sayulita
  • Merida
  • San Cristobal

With some of the best street food, museums, art, architecture, and so much more, you'll always need more time in the cities of Mexico.

4. Art

Some of the world's most well-known and beloved artists have come from the great country of Mexico. Whether you're an art buff or not, you shouldn't leave without checking out some of the country's amazing galleries and museums.

One of my favorite places in Mexico is the Frida Kahlo Museum in Mexico City. It was the artist's former home and still displays many of her most respected works.

5. Archeology - Ancient Temples, Pyramids, & Ruins

If you're interested in history and archeology, there's nowhere better than Mexico. Mexico is the center to one of the world's richest ancient history, dating back to the Mesoamerican civilizations when the Maya, Aztec, Olmec, and Zapotec groups roamed the land.

No matter where you land in the country, an out-of-this-world site is likely nearby. It's not just about the archaeology itself. For many people, visiting these ancient sites invokes a feeling of extreme connectedness to their ancestors.

Be sure to see these sites if you can:

6. Nightlife

Alright, it's time for a shoutout to my party people: you'll love Mexican nightlife!

Whether you're spending time on the beaches or in one of the super fun cities, you'll be sure to find bars, clubs, and even parties in the parks to participate in.

Mexico is known for some of the best nightclubs in the world, and you can even stay out all night long, and dance til you drop!

7. Culture - Day of the Dead

Finally, let's talk about the passionate Mexican culture. From the Oaxaca's Day of the Dead parade to mariachi bands in the street, the culture of Mexico is entertaining to watch and participate in.

An easy way to immerse yourself in the culture is to find live street music or dances nearby and ask if there are any local festivals during your visit.

You may even want to align your trip with one of the many celebrations, such as Dia de Los Muertos, Independence Day on September 16th, or Semana Santa during Easter.
