Napa Valley may be the first area that pops to mind when considering California wine country. Still, the nearby Sonoma Valley has a few treasures of its own. Centered around the historic town of Sonoma, the surrounding valley is home to some of California’s best wineries.

From age-old estates with Mediterranean-inspired villas to modern new-kids-on-the-block with chic tasting lounges, Sonoma Valley Wineries has something for every wine and design enthusiast.

You can explore this incredible wine-infused valley on a guided tour or discover by yourself as I did.

While I’m no aficionado, I loved the relaxed atmosphere of Sonoma Valley as opposed to the wine-fueled luxury of Napa. The wineries I visited had a luxurious but laid-back, rustic ambiance that makes you want to lay a picnic blanket on the lawns and sip wine all day.

If you’re in the United States, you can also plan a detour and explore the Willamette Valley wineries.

Whether you’re a seasoned wine connoisseur or simply looking for a beautiful spot to spend a few hours tasting wine, these wineries listed provide a taste of the best Sonoma offers.

Top 5 Sonoma Wineries

Sonoma County is home to more than 425 wineries, from small-family-run affairs to internationally renowned wine houses with award-winning California wines.

I chose the following as the best wineries in Sonoma for their stunning settings, incredible wines, and overall tasting experience. Salute!

5. Scribe Winery - Best For a Laid-Back Vibe

Rustic, laid-back, and oh-so-hip, Scribe Winery is where the cool crowd goes. Founded in 2007 by brothers Andrew and Adam Mariani, the winery produces a range of vibrant, terroir-driven wines in a gorgeously relaxed setting.

Their delicious sustainable wines can be sampled in an unpretentious setting at hilltop picnic tables or on Mexican blankets laid out on the grass. Snack on homegrown fruits and nuts while you test smooth Pinot Noirs and buttery Chardonnays.

You can also enjoy wine and food pairings in the beautifully restored historic 1870s Mission-style home on the property. This estate is worth spending a few hours at, enjoying the scenery and relaxing over great wine.

4. Francis Ford Coppola Winery - Best For Wine-Loving Movie Buffs

Don’t let the fact that a celebrity founded this winery deter you. The legendary six-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola owns the estate and produces some excellent wines. It’s a must-visit for movie buffs and wine lovers alike.

Wine aside, the property is also worthy of a visit. More like a resort than a wine estate, you’ll find wine-tasting bars, 2 restaurants, a swimming pool with cabanas, a performing arts pavilion, and a lovely park with bocce courts.

Take a dip in the pool, enjoy a game of bocce, dine at the on-site restaurant, or sample their extensive collection of award-winning wines. It’s worth taking a day to explore this “wine wonderland.”

Address: 300 Via Archimedes, Geyserville, CA 95441, United States

Opening Hours: Thursday -Monday 11 am - 5 pm

3. Hanzell Vineyards - Best For Views

Nestled high in the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains, Hanzell Vineyards has some of the best views in the valley! Surrounded by rolling vineyards, the quaint stone and wood winery with its a-frame roof would fit right into the land of Riesling.

Founded in 1953 by James D. Zellerbach, Hanzell Vineyards specializes in the Burgundian varietals of pinot noir—my favorite—and chardonnay. Enjoy tastings on the estate’s new platform overlooking the historic “Ambassador’s 1953” vineyard block.

While you’re tasting the superb wines, you’ll learn the history of the estate and its winemaking philosophies and soak up the spectacular views! Tastings are by appointment only as they’re limited to 6 people, so be sure to book in advance before visiting.

Address: 18596 Lomita Ave, Sonoma, CA 95476

Opening Hours: By appointment only

2. Buena Vista Winery - Best For a Rich Heritage

Buena Vista Winery oozes historic charm. Founded in 1857, Buena Vista is the oldest commercial winery in California.

You can feel the estate’s rich heritage as you walk around, from the rustic stone buildings to the original Champagne Cellars where the wine is now produced.

Tour the original winery and sample the estate’s fine wines in the 1862 Press House or the tranquil outdoor courtyard. Wander around the interactive Wine Tool Museum and marvel at old winemaking tools or relax in the plush Bubble Lounge and sip French Champagne.

The lovely grounds are perfect for picnicking and relaxing with a bottle of Buena Vista’s finest.

Address: 18000 Old Winery Rd, Sonoma, CA 95476

Opening Hours: 11 am – 5 pm

1. Chateau St. Jean - Best for French-Style Elegance

With its elegant French-style gardens and grand chateau, Chateau St. Jean takes you on a sensual journey to the vineyards of France.

Tucked in the northern end of the Sonoma Valley, the Chateau St. Jean estate is an idyllic oasis of lush gardens and patchwork vineyards set against a dramatic backdrop of rugged mountains. It’s absolutely breathtaking!

The regal 1920s chateau is just as beautiful, with ivy-covered walls and a turreted tower straight out of Rapunzel. You can tour the estate and gardens, sample their delicious wines on the large terrace, or enjoy a picnic on the lawn overlooking the vineyards.
