Arguably the best surf spot in Spain for those who want to learn how to surf. Razo has small but consistent waves that are perfect for beginners. 

Plus, there are many great surf schools and rental shops along the beach to choose from! 

If you want to make the most of your time at Razo, you can even camp along the beach to catch the first and last waves daily.

6. Playa De Somo

Found in Cantabria, Spain, Playa de Somo is absolutely breathtaking! And with great bars, surf shops, and perfect small-medium waves, you might never want to leave. 

While you can surf Playa de Somo all year, the best waves are in winter, especially in December. But the waves are still great during the summer, and it’s less crowded!

5. Zarautz

Just west of San Sebastian, Zarautz is getting increasingly popular by the day. The beach itself is miles of beautiful sand, and it’s surrounded by lush green parks. 

While there are waves for almost all levels, Zarautz is considered a great place to learn to surf. 

If you’re there in September, you can even watch the WQS (World Surf League) competition to see some of the best surfers in Europe.

4. Mundaka

Like many of the beaches on our list, Mundaka is found in the Basque region of Spain. Just outside of Bilbao, you’ll find perfect 12-foot waves here that are ideal for intermediate and experienced surfers.

Because Mundaka is one of the most popular spots in the country, it can get crowded. So I recommend going out just as the sun rises or at dusk before it gets dark.

2. Sopelana

Sopelana is one of the most popular surf spots in all of Spain. While there are days when the waves are quite big, this break is manageable for all levels. This means it could be the perfect spot for traveling with a group. 

Just north of Bilbao, Sopelana is located near several other beaches, such as Meñakoz and Zarautz, so you can hit all three on your adventure.

With huge waves reaching up to 18 feet, Meñakoz is an expert surf spot in the northern Basque region of Spain.

What to Wear While Surfing in Spain

When surfing in Spain, you should understand a few things about the necessary surf gear. 

First, if you’re going to be surfing in the Winter months, you’ll want to wear a wetsuit. Luckily, a lightweight wetsuit will do the trick, and you can either get your own or rent one at one of the many surf shops along the beach. 

Next, you may not need a wetsuit if you’re surfing during the summer. Instead, you can opt for a bathing suit, jammers, or rash guards, depending on your personal preference.

Realistically, you can surf in Spain any time of the year! Because of Spain’s geographical location, you can find great waves on several of the country’s beaches all year long. That being said, each season does offer a slightly different experience.

While many argue that the best time to surf in Spain is from September to April, it’s important to note that the waves are more prominent, but the water is also much colder. 

Whereas in the summer, the waves are smaller but much more consistent, and the water is certainly warmer. But the real swells tend to hit Spain’s coastline in the Spring and Autumn.
