Set against the foot of the Rocky Mountains, many people dream of living in Denver, Colorado, because of its natural beauty. It straddles the world between the rugged recesses of the Rockies and a sprawling urban metropolis. But there’s more to Denver than its breathtaking altitude.

With all Denver has to offer, you’ll have plenty of things to see and do when you decide to stop in!

Find out what the city is famous for and why it’s consistently listed as one of the most livable cities in the US.

What is Denver Known for?

If you’re looking for fun and adventure, Denver’s the city for you! You should know about these things if you’re visiting Denver, Colorado.

1. Elevation - Mile High City

The nickname “Mile High City” should clue you in, but if you’re unaware,  it means the city sits a mile, or 5,280 feet, above sea level.

Only in Denver will you find several buildings and establishments with the mile-high marker. That way, you’ll know exactly when you’ve reached that elevation.

The most notable mile-high marker is in the Colorado State Capitol building. Coors Field also has its own mile-high designation, and it’s indicated by the 800+ purple seats in the upper section of the venue.

Another one is located at the City Park Mile High Loop. The circuit trail sits a mile above sea level, making it an ideal training spot for serious athletes.

2. Sports - Catch the Denver Nuggets Game!

Speaking of training, Denver is known for its sports-loving atmosphere. You can’t blame the locals when the gorgeous landscape naturally inclines them to be more active and adventurous. The people of Denver constantly seek thrill and often fulfill that through sports.

Denver is one of only four US cities with a professional team in all four major sports: basketball, baseball, football, and hockey.

The city is also a popular destination for those who are into winter sports, such as skiing. It’s home to several ski resorts that take advantage of the spectacular mountain views while you practice your skills.

One of the things that Denver is known for is its natural beauty. With the Rocky Mountains as its backdrop, the city boasts a robust park system and many outdoor spaces.

Although it’s come to be known as a sprawling metropolis, its park system is quite impressive because there are over 200 parks in the city!

You’ll likely spot a green space from the city center to the small neighborhoods. The Denver Botanic Gardens is one example of a must-see spot if you’re into nature and greenery. The administrators of this park and garden have done pioneering research on water conservation.

The city’s home to world-famous breweries. It also hosts the Great American Beer Festival, the biggest in the US. Denver was one of the pioneers of the micro-brewing trend before it caught on nationally. You’ll find many craft beer brewers all over the US.

6. Sunshine - Great for outdoor sports!

Don’t forget to pack your shades! Denver is a city known for its ski resorts. Still, the reality is that it gets approximately 245 days of sunshine every year. As a result, Colorado is one of the sunniest states in the US, alongside Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada.

The abundance of sunshine in Denver makes it possible for locals and tourists to enjoy outdoor activities year-round.

Whether you’re into hiking or mountain biking, there are many trails to explore when the sun’s out. For a safe and secure hiking experience, check out these hiking apps before heading out!
