"Oh, Canada!" I hear you sing! Whether it's your homeland or not, find out why Canada makes the perfect romantic honeymoon destination for newlyweds!
Why? Because Canada is known for more than just hockey, poutine, and Anne of Green Gables, even those are all excellent reasons to visit! Canada is a scenic beauty full of opportunities for adventure, making it an ideal location to kick off your new life together.
For one, the seasons in Canada are genuinely distinct. You'll understand that if, like me, you live in a place that essentially offers different variations of rainy seasons, Canada will enchant you with its flowering springtimes, blazing hot summers, colorful autumns, and its blue-skied, frosty winters.
Are you going to Canada for your honeymoon? Great! Let's dive into the top spots to go for your honeymoon in Canada, the average cost, and what your picture-perfect Canadian honeymoon will look like!
Where to Honeymoon in Canada
Canada is a vast country — I mean, it's huge! So there are a lot of different places you could choose from for your Canadian honeymoon destination. I've rounded up the top five best honeymoon destinations in Canada and why you should consider them.
Best of all, most of these are fairly cheap honeymoon destinations!
Plus, a bonus destination! Since you'll certainly come across it in your honeymoon destination research: Niagara Falls in Ontario should be mentioned. If you love waterfalls, this is the one for you! There are plenty of action-packed activities available to do here.
But I will make myself unpopular here and say that any of the five destinations below will be much nicer than Niagara Falls because it can be very touristy.
5. Mont Tremblant, Quebec
If you prefer casual skiing, as opposed to full-blown snowsports, Tremblant is for you.
It's a cute little town in Quebec with lovely ski slopes made for every level. The town itself boasts plenty of nice little shops, an ice skating rink, and several wonderful hotels and b&bs.
If you're looking for a romantic getaway in Canada that offers lots of adventure, Mont Tremblant is a great choice!
4. Prince Edward Island
Despite staying in Canada for almost a decade, I never did make it to PEI, but it has to be on your list of potential honeymoon destinations.
PEI is known for the gorgeous Anne of Green Gables stories, as well as pretty much all of L.M. Montgomery's other books — trust a girl, I've read them all! If you've read any of those, you'll know how beautiful it is.
But, there's more: Charlottetown is a historical city with plenty of quaint streets to explore. Cavendish boasts some of Canada's most beautiful beaches, and saint Peters Bay also offers darling inns to stay in. What a romantic getaway!
3. Banff, Alberta
Banff in the province of Alberta has been described as similar to "staying in a real-life snowglobe." I can see why with its gorgeous mountainscapes and beautiful winters. Unsurprisingly, it's actually one of the most beautiful places to visit in the world.
It's a great place for skiing! Lake Louise ski resort, Mount Norquay, and the quaintly named Sunshine Village are three excellent resorts. Banff is also home to heaps of other wintry activities. You can enjoy tubing, snowmobiling, ice walking, and more. Snowmobiling was actually invented in Canada!
But best of all — are you ready? — you can chill out in the Banff Upper hot springs after a day's skiing. Get a couples' spa day and some delicious food. Honestly, what could be more romantic?
2. Whistler, British Columbia
Whistler in BC is world-renowned for its snow sports. If you get a hotel in Whistler itself, you can walk just about anywhere, so it's quite similar to Tremblant in that way.
Yet the Whistler and Blackcomb mountains are more challenging. They offer even more fun in the snow, especially for skiers and snowboarders.
If a winter honeymoon isn't your thing, Whistler is also really great in the summer. You can enjoy hiking the trails around the mountains or ziplining over the valleys. Afterward, enjoy a meal in one of Whistler's many extravagant restaurants.
1. Newfoundland and Labrador
You can visit this province in general for a beautiful, remote adventure, or take it one step further and visit Fogo Island.
Fogo Island is a secluded island in Newfoundland and Labrador. It's tiny, yet boasts a luxury hotel, fancy restaurants cooking up locally grown ingredients, and even iceberg-watching!
Fogo Island is a sort of badly-kept secret amongst Canadians, and for good reason: You'll need to get yourself to Gander in Newfoundland before catching a ferry to Fogo.
It's not the easiest to get to, but if you're feeling adventurous and want a honeymoon that makes the most of Canada's exquisite nature, this is the one!
Average Costs
Now on to the less fun side of things: the honeymoon budget. Here's a handy guide for saving up, when to start budgeting, and final tips on getting perks and extras when you book.
The current average cost of a honeymoon in Canada is around $5,100. If that sounds incredibly steep, don't despair! You can plan a more budget-friendly trip by choosing to stay in B&Bs or private rentals, or go for a mini-moon, that is, a shorter honeymoon, instead.
Bear in mind, too, that where you're traveling from will vastly influence how much your honeymoon will cost. Per the Office for National Statistics, between December 2021 and December 2022, the average costs of flights rose by 44.1%.
If you can avoid flying and can get to your honeymoon destination by coach or ferry instead, it's a definite bonus. A road trip can be another great way of visiting picturesque destinations for cheaper.
With that said, there are always lots of Canadian honeymoon packages that can cut costs, including all-inclusive packages.
What Does a Honeymoon in Canada Look Like?
Canadians are said to be incredibly friendly people, so expect to run into happy faces! People will be excited that you're on your honeymoon and will likely be willing to help you with anything you need.
Honeymooning in Canada will offer stunning scenery and vast expanses of land between cities where you see absolutely nobody. You'll see lots of wildlife if you go looking for it, which can be fascinating.
You'll also see some of the most impressive weather you've come across: think really deep, fluffy snow, blazing sunshine on sparkling lakes, and torrential rains.
The latter may not sound so appealing, but trust me when I say it's actually pretty romantic to be stuck in a downpour in the summer. Canada truly offers the warm rain of the movies.
No matter the weather or the place you choose to honeymoon, you'll love Canada for its delicious foods, plenty of adventure sports, and exciting sights to see. A Canadian honeymoon will be a memorable trip of a lifetime.
