The idea of a vacation after a long term of work or study can excite any traveler. It’s all fun and games until you realize how exhausting travel planning gets when you are juggling confirmations, schedules, and “where did I put that email?” moments.
Here’s the good news: itinerary apps can reduce the chaos fast. TripIt is one of the best travel planner apps in this category, especially among frequent and business travelers. In this TripIt review (updated for 2026), we’ll break down what TripIt does well, what still feels stuck in the past, and whether TripIt Pro is worth paying for.
If you are planning vacation travel with friends or family and you want something that feels more modern, more collaborative, and still free, we’ll also show you a newer alternative: Pilot, the trip planner we built specifically for leisure travel planning and shared itineraries.
Let’s start the review of TripIt with what exactly are they.

What is TripIt?
TripIt is a travel planning app that is designed to create itineraries by integrating all your travel details in one place. It helps travelers organize, manage, and track itineraries in a hassle-free manner. But if you know already, there are other travel apps out there offering similar services.
TripIt’s “secret sauce” is inbox-forwarding (or inbox sync) rather than manual entry. That’s why it became a go-to for travelers who live in their email, especially people doing a lot of flights and hotel hops.
TripIt is also part of the SAP Concur ecosystem (TripIt was acquired by Concur, which later became SAP Concur). That corporate DNA shows up in the product: strong on logistics, lighter on the fun, flexible “vacation planning” side of travel.
Is the TripIt app worth your time, and should you upgrade to a TripIt pro if you’re an avid traveler? Let’s find out how and if TripIt is worth it!
Quick verdict
TripIt is still a solid “itinerary from email” tool. If you mostly want your flight and hotel confirmations in one clean timeline, it works.
If you're looking for a free alternative auto-import feature that's also a holistic travel planning tool that you can use with your tripmates, check out Pilot! Yes, it is really free.
Where it falls behind is everything modern trip planning now expects: planning the actual experience (things to do), collaborating without friction, keeping decisions and context in the same place, and having a product that feels like it was designed in this decade.
Is TripIt free?
The short answer is "it depends".
There are 4 different plans for TripIt depending on your needs. The basic plan is free to use but offers a limited-service of additional features that can benefit frequent travelers. So, how much does TripIt Pro cost?
TripIt Pro costs $49 annually, with per-user license plans for TripIt for teams and up. Below’s a rundown of TripIt’s subscription plans and the features that they offer.

TripIt Subscription Plans
Still not sure if you should get TripIt Pro or stick with free? Here’s the practical breakdown.
TripIt (free):
TripIt’s free plan is mainly about pulling your travel details into one place.
Typical free-plan highlights include:
- Master itinerary across devices
- Adding plans via email forwarding (and optionally inbox sync)
- Calendar access and basic sharing
- A handful of “nice to have” travel info features like carbon footprint tracking
- Tracks and summarizes your travel stats
- Upload up to 3 documents per trip
TripIt Pro:
The paid version costs $49 annually and offers additional features that come in handy for regular travelers. The additional features that you can’t find in the basic subscription include:
Common TripIt Pro highlights include:
- Real-time flight alerts and disruption help
- Seat tracking, fare tracking, and points related features
- Extra airport and trip-day guidance
- Higher document upload limits (25 per trip vs. 3 on free)
What are the major features offered by TripIt?
TripIt and TripIt Pro cover a lot of ground, but the big ones most travelers care about are:
- Creating itineraries from confirmation emails (flights, hotels, car rentals, activities)
- Keeping trip details in one place across devices
- Sharing trip plans with others when needed
- TripIt Pro adds more “live” support, especially around flights and airport logistics
TripIt also leans into stats, like tracking your travel history and showing carbon footprint for flights.
What are the Major Features Offered by TripIt?
There are many features that TripIt and TripIt pro offers, but here are the major features that a subscription to TripIt gets you:
- The ability to create multiple itineraries that include all travel-related details from flights, accommodation to car rentals
- Displays interesting travel stats, total carbon emissions of your past flights, neighborhood score, and nearby attractions of places you visit
TripIt Pro has additional paid features that include,
- Flight status, real-time alerts on flight delays, transportation options, and alternative flights
- Rewards point tracking, seat tracking, and VIP travel benefits to help you save money
- Detailed maps of airports

How Does TripIt Work?
Once you create a TripIt account, it builds itineraries using booking confirmation emails for flights, lodging, rentals, and other reservations. The simplest method is to forward confirmations, but TripIt also supports inbox sync for more automation.
You can share trip details with other TripIt users, and TripIt can also share itineraries with non-users (for example, by emailing an itinerary). TripIt’s help docs also describe sharing via private invitations and public links in the newer web experience.
How to send your itinerary to TripIt?
After booking your flight, hotel, rental, or other reservation, forward the confirmation email to:
TripIt then creates a new trip or adds the plan to an existing trip, and you’ll get a notification email confirming what happened
How to cancel your TripIt Pro Subscription?
If you upgraded and want to cancel auto-renewal, TripIt’s current help guidance (as of 2025) points you to:
- Sign into the TripIt website
- Go to Account, then Subscription and Billing
- Cancel TripIt Pro
If you purchased TripIt Pro through Apple or Google Play, you generally cancel through your App Store or Google Play subscription settings.
One important “fine print” detail: TripIt’s user agreement states that fees already paid are nonrefundable, and you need to cancel before a free trial ends to avoid being charged.

Is TripIt Pro worth it?
If you fly a lot, especially for work, TripIt Pro can be useful. The alerts, airport guidance, and trackers can reduce stress on travel days. TripIt itself positions Pro as the plan that helps you “stay one step ahead,” and the price is still US$49/year.
That said, value depends on how much you already get from airlines, Google, and your existing wallet of apps:
- Many flight alerts are duplicated by airlines now (and airline alerts are still the source of truth)
- Some Pro features are nice, but not essential for most leisure travelers
- If you mostly travel a few times a year, it can feel like you are paying for “just in case” convenience
So, is TripIt Pro worth it? For frequent flyers, sometimes yes. For most vacation travelers, the free plan is usually enough.
Here's a rundown of all the pros and cons of TripIt in detail.
What We Like About TripIt
Automation
Forwarding emails (or using inbox sync) is still one of the fastest ways to build a clean itinerary without manual work.
Convenience
TripIt does a good job bringing core trip logistics together, especially flights and lodging. It’s the “one place” effect that stops you from digging through email while standing in an airport line.
Useful Features
Document storage exists (with limits), plus features like carbon footprint tracking can be genuinely helpful for some travelers.
Alerts (for Pro)
TripIt Pro is built around proactive notifications for disruptions and travel-day logistics.
Ability to Plan Trips in Groups
Trip sharing has relatively improved. You can share with other TripIt users and, in some cases, non-users, and newer help docs mention public links and private invitations. In my opinion though, it's still severely lacking in the collaborative aspects.

Why TripIt is Outdated
This is the part of the TripIt review where opinions show up, but they are grounded in how travel planning has evolved.
1) TripIt Pro is not expensive, but it feels expensive
US$49/year is not wild. The issue is perceived value: many travelers feel like they are paying to repackage things they already get elsewhere (airline alerts, calendars, maps), just in a nicer wrapper.
2) Email-first planning is both its strength and its ceiling
TripIt is amazing at turning confirmations into an itinerary. But travel planning in 2026 is not only confirmations. It’s:
- collecting ideas
- choosing what to do
- building a day-by-day plan
- keeping notes, links, and decisions tied to specific activities
TripIt mostly starts after you book. For vacation travel, that’s often too late.
3) It isn’t built for “fun planning”
TripIt was never trying to be a social, flexible “Google Docs replacement” for trips. It’s more official, more utilitarian, and it shows. That’s perfect for some people. For most leisure travelers, it can feel like using enterprise software to plan a beach weekend. Enterprise software trapped in 2012 that is.
4) Document limits are still a real constraint
TripIt’s document feature is useful, but the upload caps (3 documents per trip on free, 25 on Pro) can become annoying for travelers who like storing everything inside their trip plan.
5) Auto-import is not perfect
TripIt’s automation is strong, but it can miss smaller bookings or weirdly formatted confirmations. When that happens, you either forward manually or enter details yourself, and the magic fades.
Is TripIt Worth it?
Now for the final question, is TripIt actually any good, and if so, should you pay for their pro subscriptions?
TripIt is still good at what it was built for: organizing booked travel details in one place, especially flights. If that is your main goal, it’s a okay choice.
But if you are looking for a modern trip planner that helps you plan experiences, collaborate with friends, build a shared itinerary and map, and keep everything in one place without paywalls, TripIt can feel like legacy tech.
I certainly think there are better free options to use than TripIt, so for that instance, We believe that you should not sign up for its pro version unless you're a frequent or business traveler looking for a way to stay organized.
My Rating: 3.8/5
Pros:
- Automated itinerary.
- Convenient all-in-one itinerary
- Useful Pro alerts for frequent flyers
- Sharing options that include private invites and public links
Cons:
- Pro can feel like paying for repackaged basics
- More logistics than true trip planning
- Dated, “official” vibe compared to newer tools
- Document limits can be restrictive
- Refund policy is strict (no refunds on paid fees)
A newer, free alternative to TripIt: Pilot
If TripIt is the “organize my confirmations” tool, Pilot is trying to be the “plan the whole trip together” tool.
