I was looking for a low-cost airline to and from Vietnam. With more than 15 domestic and 25 international destinations, VietJet Air is an airline I was considering. Now, were they worth my time and money? Find out what to expect from this airline in my detailed VietJet Air review.

It's a very challenging task to pick the best low-cost airline. With an increase in low-cost carriers worldwide, it's getting harder to decide. While some may offer low airfares, the quality of its services is usually poor.

In contrast, some may have excellent in-flight experiences but fail to meet the budget criteria. And if you're traveling on a budget, every penny counts.

I find myself constantly trying to decide what sacrifices I want to make.

If you're looking for a perfect balance of affordable rates and good quality, VietJet Air, just like Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines, might be a good choice for you.

But I find it's always better to have all the information before you book a flight with a low-cost carrier. I made this VietJet Air review covering everything from its facilities to in-flight experience to common questions such as, "Is this airline worth your time and money? And what about the in-flight experience? Are they good at that too?"

Let's get started with this VietJet Air review, shall we?

What Is VietJet Air?

VietJet Air is an international low-cost airline based in Vietnam. It was founded in late 2007.

The airline is headquartered in Hanoi and has many main hubs, such as Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City, and Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi.

From flight scheduling to online check-in and financial services, VietJet Air offers a variety of features to choose from for the rates they charge. You can book both domestic and international flights at very pocket-friendly rates.

The airline has an operational fleet of 77 Airbus aircraft flying to more than 15 domestic and 25 global destinations.

VietJet Air has been recognized as the Best Ultra Low-Cost Airline by the airline review website Airline Ratings since 2018. The airline strives to continuously level up its game with more fuel-efficient engines and new-generation aircraft.

The company also aims to exceed the expectations of both business and leisure travelers.

  • Ahmedabad
  • Almaty
  • Bali
  • Bangalore
  • Busan
  • Kaohsiung

Booking Flights with VietJet

Directly From Its Website

Once you head over to VietJet Air's official website, you'll see that this will be an easy booking option.

Its website is user-friendly, and you'll see 2 places to "Book a Flight" immediately. There's a search box in the top section of the website. But you'll find another search function as soon as you scroll as well!

Just enter your destination, travel dates, and the number of passengers. You're already halfway there...

Here's where it gets interesting: you'll often find exclusive deals and discounts that aren't unavailable elsewhere. Who doesn't love a good deal, right?

After you've browsed and selected your flight, you'll proceed to the payment page. The website accepts various forms of payment, including credit cards, debit cards, and even some digital wallets, so it's really handy.

And that's it! You've got your tickets in just a few clicks, and you're all set to jet off on your adventure.

Cheap VietJet Air Flights With Skyscanner

Not a plug, but merely my suggestion: If you're still looking at VietJet Air flights for your trip to Vietnam, you should try SkyScanner! I find that most of the time, this is the best option for flights because you get to compare.

SkyScanner helps you find the cheapest flights available so that you wouldn't have to pay more for flight tickets and save that money for more things to do or food to eat.

Is VietJet Air Safe?

VietJet Air is a safe airline to fly with.

It meets all the international safety standards of ICAO, IATA, and other global aviation organizations. The airline has one of the youngest fleets in the world, with an average age of 3.7 years. I don't feel totally safe on older planes, so I'm a fan of this.

VietJet Air In-Flight Experience

VietJet Air claims to focus on providing a fantastic in-flight experience to its passengers. But does it live up to this?

Seats and Legroom

Passengers get to choose their seats at the time of their booking. And VietJet Air recommends that you prebook your seat to sit beside your companion.

I love selecting my own seat, and it's often not possible on budget airlines. This is a big plus for me about Vietjet Air.

If you fly in Vietjet's more expensive ticket tiers, you'll be happy with more space and comfort. After all, the seats in the upgraded class are larger and have more legroom than those in economy class.

Amenities and Entertainment

The airline offers various in-flight entertainment options to keep you occupied during the journey. You can choose from various movies, TV shows, music, and games.

You need to be aware that the airline doesn't offer any complimentary items, including water. So, if you plan to travel with VietJet Air, bring your own food and snacks.

General Atmosphere and Service

Unfortunately, there have been instances where armrests were chewed up with no padding, making it uncomfortable for the passengers.

In addition, some flyers reported the cabin crew as unprofessional and unhelpful.

After all of these reviews, I would say the company's focus on the in-flight experience needs a lot of work...

What's the VietJet Air Baggage Policy?

Carry-on Baggage

Passengers can bring one piece of carry-on baggage on board, and the total weight must not exceed 7kg. The maximum dimensions for the carry-on baggage are 56cm × 36cm × 23 cm.

Any hand luggage without a VietJet tag will not be allowed, so you can't just sneak things on like some other airlines.

Checked Baggage

The maximum weight for checked baggage is 20kg. Any passenger who wishes to check in more than 20kg must pay an excess baggage fee.

Infants under 2 years of age cannot bring any checked baggage.

Check all baggage and other updated rates on Vietjet's fee and charges page.

Flight Add-Ons

VietJet Air offers a wide range of add-ons to make your journey more comfortable. Some extras include early check-in, prebooking, hotels, insurance, and a power pass.

Flight extras include the following:

  • Prebooking of convenient services like more baggage, meals, and seats
  • Up to 70% off on hotels all over the world
  • ''Buy once fly hundred times' air travel package with Power Pass SkyBoss
  • Reliable insurance services of VietJet insurance partners
  • Fly first, pay later financial services - this is something I think it actually really cool and something I haven't seen too many other places.

What Others Are Saying

While some have been content with their VietJet Air experience, others have found the airline unprofessional with poor quality of service.

Some flyers complained that the airline staff was not very helpful when they needed assistance and that the check-in process was chaotic. For me, that's something that pushes me elsewhere.

The airline doesn't offer any complimentary services, such as water. In my opinion, this is not only highly frustrating for long-haul flights but also wholly unacceptable.

People have also mentioned repetitive complaints about delayed and canceled flights, which can screw up your plans!

Ticket Tiers

Ready to book your flight with VietJet Air but not sure about which ticket tier to go for? Don't sweat it! Here's a quick rundown to help you figure out the perfect fit for your travel needs.

Eco Class

If you're all about saving money for the adventures waiting at your destination, then the Eco Class is your best bet.

It's VietJet's most basic offering, providing a standard seat. You can still purchase extra services like baggage allowance or seat selection if you need them.

Deluxe Class

Looking for a little more comfort without breaking the bank? Deluxe Class could be your match.

You'll get more legroom, a free 7kg carry-on, and 20kg checked baggage allowance. Plus, you get priority check-in—a real timesaver at busy airports.

SkyBoss Class

Now, if you really want to fly in style, then SkyBoss is the way to go.

With SkyBoss, you'll enjoy all the benefits of Deluxe, plus access to the SkyBoss airport lounge, where you can relax and refuel before your flight. You also get priority boarding and a hot meal on board.

It's the top tier for a reason!

Each of Vietjet's options offers a different level of service to suit your needs and budget. Remember, whether you're in it to save or keen to start your vacation in the lap of luxury, you may find something with Vietjet.

Is VietJet Airlines Worth It?

Overall, VietJet Air seems only a worthwhile option for truly budget-conscious travelers. It's not the best choice if you're looking for even the basics in comfort, service, and in-flight amenities.

VietJet Air also doesn't have a wide range of international destinations. And if you're looking to fly to a non-Asian country, you'll likely need to consider another airline.

VietJet only offers flights to Asian destinations, so your trip will be split with other carriers anyways.

My Rating: 2.8/5

Pros:

  • It covers several international destinations in Asia
  • Financial facilities
  • Budget-friendly fares
  • Possibility to select seats

Cons:

  • Poor cabin crew service
  • Uncomfortable seats
  • Frequent flight delays and cancellations
  • In-flight entertainment is not complimentary

Frequently Asked Questions About Vietjet Air

How Can I Check-in for a Vietjet Air Flight?

Passengers can check-in for their flights online via the airline's website, at a self-service kiosk at the airport, or at the check-in counter.

The availability of these options may depend on the departure airport.

What is the Cancelation Policy of Vietjet Air?

The cancellation policy can vary depending on the fare type purchased.

Based on my research, you'll be charged to cancel your flight, and depending on your fare type the fee will be between US$50 to US$75. Overall, it seems to offer very fair cancelation fees, especially considering Vietjet Air is a budget airline.

If you cancel, you will get a refund, but it will be given to you in form of a "credit shell". This is "money" you can use on other Vietjet Air flights, staying valid for up to 2 years.

I recommend you read the fare rules before booking and double-check for any changes to its policy since publishing this article.

How Can I Change or Modify My Booking With Vietjet Air?

The ability to change your booking will depend on the type of fare you've purchased. And the information is a bit shaky on its website.

When I look at it, it seems you'll be charged a small fee if it's a flight within Vietnam or if there's a name change. This fee is more significant if you've purchased a cheaper fare option.

If you are looking to make changes to an international flight, the fee gets more serious.

Generally, you can modify your booking online via the Vietjet Air website or by contacting their customer service.

Does Vietjet Air Have a Codeshare Agreement With Any Other Airlines?

VietJet Air only codeshares with Japan Airlines and its subsidiary airline, Thai VietJet Air.

What does codesharing mean? Codeshare agreements are essentially business arrangements between airlines.

One airline will publish and market a flight under its own airline designator and flight number, also known as the code, as part of its published timetable or schedule. But the flight is actually operated by a partner airline.

Does Vietjet Air Offer a Frequent Flyer Program?

Yes, Vietjet Air has a frequent flyer program called "Vietjet Skyclub". Passengers can earn points when they fly with Vietjet Air, which can be used for future flights or services.

Does Vietjet Air Offer Wi-Fi On Board?

No. As of January 2024, Vietjet Air still does not offer in-flight Wi-Fi.

Does Vietjet Air Offer In-Flight Meals?

If you purchase the higher tiers of tickets, there are meals you can choose from. However, if you're buying the cheapest ones, you must either bring your food and drink or pay.

It's crazy, but they don't even give you water!

How to Ensure a Great Trip!
