Who are World Nomads?
World Nomads is a company that offers travel insurance, covering over 140 countries at present. They have partnered with trusted and reputed underwriters from these countries to offer you a reliable service. Interestingly, a small part of your travel insurance purchase goes towards community building and sustainable travel projects.
It was founded in 2002 by Simon Monk, with the aim of offering simple and flexible insurance plans ideal for everyone from independent travelers to digital nomads to students to families.
In addition to offering insurance plans, World Nomads also offers safety advice, travel tips, and inspiring stories from fellow travelers. This way, you are aware of the kind of safety issues that prevail in the country you are traveling to.
What does World Nomads cover?
At present, World Nomad offers two insurance plans to choose from - the Standard Plan and Explorer Plan.
The Standard Plan covers the basics of travel insurance and is an ideal choice if you don’t have plans to engage in extreme adventure activities. It covers emergency medical expenses, personal belongings, trip interruptions, pre-trip cancellation, repatriation, and some adventure activities, to name some.
The Explorer Plan is ideal for those who wish to engage in a lot of off-road adventures and need extra medical coverage. It offers an extended cover for the events included in the Standard Plan and more perks. For example, you get unlimited medical expense coverage in this plan. Some of the extras offered by the Explorer Plan are coronavirus travel costs, personal accidents, money, hijack, and rental car access.
What’s covered in these plans and their limits can vary from country to country. You can request a quote to know more about World Nomads Standard vs. Explorer plan cover for your destination.
How to get a travel insurance quote from World Nomads?
It’s easy. Visit the website, and you will find a form on the homepage to fill in and request a quote instantly. You have to enter the countries or regions you intend to visit, country of your residence, travel duration, number of travelers, and age of each traveler. Then, you will get the cost of the Standard Plan and Explorer Plan along with all the details regarding what’s covered and what’s not.
Does World Nomads cover Covid quarantine?
World Nomads travel insurance plans cover some Covid-related emergencies for certain countries. They include emergency medical expenses, trip delay or interruption, and in some cases, trip cancellation charges. Your medical expenses in this regard will be covered similar to any other sickness. However, it doesn’t cover broad quarantine measures or other travel restrictions implemented by the government.
What’s covered and not covered for Covid-related events mainly depends on the insurance provider of your destination. So, make sure you read the inclusions and exclusions well beforehand and get them clarified.
It is noteworthy that World Nomads can pause offering insurance plans for some countries due to prevailing conditions and policies of their insurers. At present, they don't sell plans for travelers in Australia and New Zealand.
How to make a claim?
You have to create an account with World Nomads in order to purchase an insurance plan. To make a claim, log into your account, and go to the “Make a Claim” section. Select the relevant category, answer the questions, and submit all the necessary documents. These include the receipts and invoices of the expenses incurred during the emergency. Once you have reviewed the claim, click submit. The customer support team will contact you from thereon. It can take up to a couple of months to finish processing the claim.
What’s great about World Nomads
- Extensive coverage
Travel insurance isn’t just essential to safeguard yourself from medical emergencies. You should also brace yourself for other issues like theft, delays, and family emergencies. Both the plans cover these aspects comprehensively. World Nomads also offers coverage for over 150 activities under the categories of snow, water, air, land, sports, and experience. So if you are an adventure enthusiast, their travel insurance is one of the best options for you.
- Value for money
World Nomads is not the cheapest in the market. But, considering what they cover, they are definitely one of the most reasonably-priced insurance companies in the market. They also have only two plans, making your choice easier.
- Convenience and support
One of the major pain points of insurance is making the claim itself. With World Nomads, you can easily make your claim online! It is also renowned for its customer service, offered throughout the day. Many World Nomads reviews had highlighted how the customer support team is super responsive, helpful, and quick in helping customers claim the coverage. They will help you get in touch with medical professionals or facilities and even arrange transport if necessary.
- The flexibility of booking and extending plans
Travel insurance is something many tend to forget or overlook. But, with World Nomads, you can purchase one even after you have started traveling. Travelers can also extend their insurance plans mid-trip via the website. You can insure trips up to 180 days.
As World Nomads is run by avid travelers, you have access to the latest updates on travel restrictions, health and safety guidelines, and general travel tips. There are plenty of resources, from articles to podcasts, helping you learn the ropes of traveling safely. You also have the opportunity to learn new languages and bag scholarships.
What World Nomads can do better
- The age limit
World Nomads travel insurance plans are offered only for citizens up to 70 years old. For Canada, the maximum is 66, and for the U.K, it is 65. They also don’t cover expenses of pre-existing medical conditions. So, it is not a great travel insurance option for senior citizens. However, they are working on increasing the age limit.
- Limited coverage for belongings
If you are carrying expensive electronics or specialist travel gear, baggage covered offered by World Nomads might not be sufficient for you. The Explorers Plan’s maximum limit for personal belongings is $3500, while the Standard Plan covers only up to $1500. Also, the limit per single electronic item is $750 in Explorer and $500 in Standard.
Is World Nomads worth it?
Considering the pros and cons and the credibility of World Nomads insurance plans, we can say it’s a worthy choice, especially for backpackers. It’s also a social-conscious enterprise, meaning your purchases have a greater impact.
But, it’s also noteworthy that we came across a fair share of negative World Nomads reviews. They primarily highlighted issues related to claiming and customer support. So, it’s not perfect, just like any other company. Do consider other options available in the market before you make a decision. Here’s a quick round-up of its pros and cons.
