Why use Pilot over Viator

  • Reason #1

    Private rates straight from hotels

Viator marks up prices, buries the checkout in fees and add-ons, and sells sponsored placement to whoever pays the most. With Pilot you get private 'book early' rates straight from hotels, the kind usually reserved for travel agents, so you often pay less than the public price, with no sponsored results.

  • Reason #4

Built for the experience, not just search traffic

Viator has been around longer and put a lot into pages built to rank in search, which makes it look bigger by traffic. Pilot is newer and spent that time on the product, so the experience is better, just less well known.

    Built for group trips

What do users say about Pilot (vs. Viator)?

Viator's app rates around 4.9 on iOS and 4.5 on Google Play, and it carries a 4.5 on Trustpilot. Because Viator is a marketplace reselling third-party tours, the recurring complaints are about the operator handoff: cancellations, refund delays, and tickets sorted out between you and a separate operator. Pilot is rated 4.7 by 50,000+ travelers, who tell us they like having the whole trip in one place, the map of everywhere they're going, and planning together with their group.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Nice consolidation tool for travel plan, tickets, etc. Me and my daughter can share a travel plan, and add the whole itinerary, with pre-booked tickets, daily excursion plans, etc. It makes organisation of the trip incredibly easy and all information between travelers are shared
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Went to Amsterdam for the first time. Loved having all the trip details located in one spot on my phone - maps, hotel, air, event tickets. I was able to to go the app and all the QR codes were right there. Also being able to share the app so we could each put in details was a great feature.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
His support was wonderful. Went extra mile to support us and getting us accommodated with the hotel. Really appreciate it. 5 stars service !!

First Pilot App Trip Used the Pilot app for a trip to Amsterdam and it was a great tool! We had our full itinerary with websites, tickets, hotel and air schedules. It was shareable so we could collaborate while planning. It's also printable in case of phone issues. The map function was great in planning to help us decide what to do each day and what area we would be in. Will definitely be using it again for future trips.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
How disappointed would you be if you could no longer use Pilot?: Very Disappointed. What is the main benefit you get from Pilot?: Centralised planning for family
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I travel regularly for both work and for fun, and Pilot really helps me stay organised, ensures I don't miss anything and gives me a constant point of reference to come back to for the various details required both before and during travel. When I'm travelling with friends, being able to invite them into the trip and see all of the details that I would normally have to send to them in a god send! Apart from the practical side, the visual experience is very nice and adds a great touch to trip planning.

Common questions about Pilot vs. Viator

What is Viator?

Viator is a tours and activities booking site. People use it to book guided tours, activities, and attraction tickets. It books tours and activities rather than hotels, and it does not plan the wider trip.

What is Pilot?

Pilot is a trip booking and planning app. You plan the whole trip in one place, a flexible itinerary, a map of your stops, notes, and your group, and you book your hotel in the app at private rates straight from hotels, the kind usually reserved for travel agents. Where Viator books the tours, Pilot plans the whole trip and books your hotel directly.

Is Pilot a good Viator alternative?

It depends on what you're trying to do. Viator is a marketplace for booking tours, activities, and experiences, and that's all it does: it doesn't plan your trip and it doesn't book your hotel. Pilot is a trip planner that also books stays, so it covers the parts of the trip Viator leaves out. With Pilot you build a flexible day-by-day itinerary, map everywhere you're going, keep notes and files in one place, plan together with your group in real time, and book your hotel at private rates straight from hotels, across more than 3,000,000 stays, with no sponsored results. The honest caveat is that Pilot does not book tours and activities in the app, so if booking a specific tour is the only thing you need, Viator still has a role. For planning the trip and booking the stay, Pilot does far more, for free.

Is Viator free to use?

Viator is free to browse, and you pay only when you book a tour or activity. The cost is in the booking itself: as a marketplace reselling third-party operators, Viator marks up activity prices and sells sponsored placement, so the tour at the top of the list isn't always the best deal for you. Pilot is also free, and it's a full trip planner with no paywall on the basics, plus in-app hotel booking at private 'book early' rates straight from hotels. Pilot earns from hotels when you book, so it never has to charge you to plan.

How does Viator work and how does it make money?

Viator is owned by Tripadvisor and works as a marketplace: local operators list tours and activities, you book through Viator, and Viator takes a commission on each booking, plus revenue from sponsored placement that lets operators pay to rank higher in results. You get a mobile ticket, often with a QR code, and the experience itself is run by the third-party operator, which is why cancellations and refunds are handled between you and that operator. Pilot makes money a different way, from hotels when you book a stay through the app, not from charging you or from selling placement, so its results are ranked for you and the trip planner stays free.

Can you book hotels on Viator?

No. Viator books tours, activities, and experiences only, not hotels. If you want a hotel, you have to book it somewhere else and track it separately. Pilot lets you book over 3,000,000 hotels right in the app, at private rates straight from hotels, the kind usually reserved for travel agents, and the booking lives with the rest of your trip instead of in a separate tab, so your plan and your stay stay together.

Does Viator plan your trip or build an itinerary?

No. Viator is a booking marketplace, not a planner: there's no day-by-day itinerary, no trip map, no notes or checklists, and no way to plan together with a group. You can save activities, but you can't build the trip around them. Pilot is built for exactly that: a flexible, drag-and-drop itinerary, a map of everywhere you're going, notes and files in one place, real-time collaboration with your group, and an AI that drafts an itinerary in minutes and imports your confirmations. So Pilot helps you plan the whole trip, then lets you book your stay, while Viator only sells the activity.

Is Viator legit and safe to book with?

Viator is a real marketplace owned by Tripadvisor, and it carries about a 4.5 on Trustpilot. Because it resells third-party operators, the recurring friction is in the operator handoff: cancellations, refund delays, and tickets that get sorted out between you and a separate company rather than Viator itself. Pilot is rated 4.7 by 50,000+ travelers, and when you book a hotel through Pilot the booking runs through us, so we work with the hotel on your behalf and there are real people on our team to reach in the in-app chat or by email if anything goes wrong.

Pilot vs Viator: which should I use?

Use Pilot to plan the trip and book the stay: a flexible itinerary, a map, group collaboration, and your hotel booked at private rates straight from hotels, with no sponsored results, all in one place and free. Use Viator if the only thing you need is to book a one-off tour or activity, with a mobile QR ticket and Klarna pay-later, and you're planning the rest of the trip and booking your hotel somewhere else. Many travelers use Pilot to plan and book the trip, and book individual tours separately.
