Mexico is known for its gorgeous beaches and palm trees. So most people think of it as a tropical escape.

But Mexico is a large country with varying climates and unique geographical areas.

Some areas have jungles, and others have beaches. Many don't realize that Mexico is also home to some fantastic ski resorts tucked away in the mountains.

You should research the climate in your particular destination before packing for Mexico! The most popular Mexican destinations are famous for their tropical weather. But some areas have colder temperatures that appeal to avid skiers.

If you’re looking for something unique to try in Mexico, learn more about what to expect when you go skiing. Now's your opportunity to enjoy a different experience on your next visit!

Is There Skiing in Mexico?

While there's snow in Mexico, don't expect heavy snowfall. You can experience snow in the mountainous regions of Mexico, especially at high altitudes. These include Durango, Baja California, Coahuila, Chihuahua, and San Luis Toposi.

The best ski resorts in Mexico are nestled on top of the mountains. Some central states in Mexico have snow, but they’re only available in those areas with the highest peaks.

When to Go Skiing in Mexico

The best time to go skiing in Mexico is during the winter, from December to February. During this time, the temperature drops. Visiting during these months won't guarantee snow, but it increases your chances of experiencing snowfall in Mexico!

January is the month when Mexico experiences the highest amount of snow, with an average of 4.4 days in January. It's also the coldest month in Mexico, with an average temperature of 13°C.

That being said, Mexico’s weather can be unpredictable and change quite frequently. Checking the weather before planning your ski trip is a good idea. You must also plan your visits to ski resorts in Mexico on a weekday to avoid the crowd. It’ll ensure a more enjoyable experience on the slopes.

How to Pack for a Ski Trip in Mexico

When packing to ski in Mexico, it’s mandatory to pack warm clothing and cold-weather gear. Always pack a base layer and an outer layer to keep yourself warm. You'll also need gloves, a hat, and waterproof boots.

Always pack your sunscreen and sunglasses to protect you from the sun on the slopes. If you plan on skiing in Mexico for multiple days, it’s best to pack your own skiing gear. Renting can be costly, especially if you’re using the gear and equipment for several days.

Planning a ski trip is exciting, especially if you’re a first-time skier. Make sure you’re all set for fun in the snow!

Where to Go Skiing in Mexico

Many ski enthusiasts choose the Italian Alps or Spain if they’re looking to hit the slopes for a thrilling adventure in the snow. You can add Mexico to your list of options, as there are plenty of mountains and slopes worth exploring.

Nevado de Toluca

Skiing on a volcano? It’s the ultimate adventure for skiing enthusiasts!

Nevado de Toluca is an imposing stratovolcano in central Mexico that’s famous among hikers and skiers. It offers rugged terrain for thrill-seeking individuals to partake in various winter activities. Its snow-covered slopes also provide the ideal skiing conditions!

Nevado de Toluca's crater is accessible by road, which is part of why it's become a famous tourist destination. The initial plan to build a ski resort in the area was quashed due to the potential negative environmental impact. Skiing in Toluca is still possible, but you can only do so for a day.

The challenging terrain is more suited for advanced skiers as they’re tricky to manage. You'd have to be in your best shape to carry your skiing gear up the mountain. However, your efforts will be worthwhile since nothing beats the rush of skiing down the mountain slopes! It’s a one-of-a-kind adventure.

Arteaga, Coahuila

Arteaga is located in Sierra de Arteaga in the northern state of Coahuila. It's a tourist development area where you can go skiing and snowboarding. It's also where you'll find Bosques de Monterreal, Mexico's first and only ski center. The center offers year-round skiing opportunities for avid fans of the sport.

However, winter is the best time to visit Arteaga for skiing in Mexico. The snow beautifies the mountainous landscape. You’ll also find Swiss-style chalet cabins that are the best places to stay if you want to ski for multiple days.

Bosques de Monterreal has two ski slopes with facilities to improve your skiing skills. The main track is 230 meters long and has a 20-degree incline. Another learning track is available at 45 meters long. You can also enjoy other winter activities like sledding and rappelling.

Pico de Orizaba

Pico de Orizaba sits 5,000 meters above sea level. It’s one of the go-to destinations for anyone looking to try skiing in central Mexico. It’s the highest mountain in the country, making it one of the most challenging ski spots!

The ski slopes have a 50-degree incline at their highest point. It’s thrilling and challenging, so these slopes are built for experienced skiers. They are technically difficult to navigate and require agility and a high skill level. They're also incredibly steep and icy during the peak season.

It’s the ultimate challenge for skiers looking for the ultimate rush. Feel your heart pumping as you speed down the slopes. It will be a view you surely won’t forget!
