VyprVPN Review [2024]: Worth It For Digital Nomads?
Are you considering traveling to China or another country with a restrictive firewall and a track record of blocking VPNs? VyprVPN might be what you're looking for. I break down whether the Swedish service is really best for circumnavigating firewalls.

When traveling, the whole point of a VPN is to let you access online services that might be blocked in the country you're visiting.

Depending on where you're traveling, this could be your preferred streaming services, government websites back home, or just your favorite news and social media sites.

When considering internet restrictions, most people think of China and their "Great Firewall." But you'll find similar internet restrictions in many countries, including India, Bahrain, Iran, Syria, and Vietnam.

These firewalls block access to specific online resources and can be very good at detecting and blocking VPNs. This means that the expensive VPN service you subscribe to might not work. If this is one of your travel challenges, consider an alternative like VyprVPN.

While it's one of the more expensive VPNs on the market and doesn't offer the best speeds, the Swiss-based VPN is said to do more than most to ensure its services work, even in VPN-unfriendly countries.

Find out if VyprVPN will work for you right here.

What is VyprVPN?

VyprVPN is a virtual private network that you can use to keep your online activity confidential and circumnavigate geographic internet restrictions.

Vypr is among the scores of popular VPN services alongside names such as Surfshark VPNNord VPN, and CyberGhost VPN.

When using a VPN, rather than communicating directly between your device and the website or online service you want to use, you send your link via a network of anonymous servers.

This masks your identity and location, making you appear as though you're online from a different location.

So, you could be online on a beach in the Bahamas while it appears you're in your home office in the US.

The VPN also encrypts all the data you send and receive using AES-256-bit encryption, making it virtually impossible for hackers to unscramble your data.

This service can be essential when traveling and using unreliable or compromised public Wi-Fi to get online.

Where is VyprVPN Located?

VyprVPN is based in Switzerland, which has strong personal data privacy laws. This contrasts with many VPNs based in countries with weak online privacy laws.

My Initial Impressions

Looking into VyprVPN, I was initially impressed by how reliable and safe the service is. This is not true of all services that let your data leak or even sell anonymized data to third parties.

Most VPN services also claim to have a no-logs policy. They do not keep records of your data or what you do online, so they've no data to sell or share with authorities.

In most cases, you can only take the company's word for this. But with VyprVPN, they went through an independent audit in 2018 that verified those policies.

When I wanted to sign up, I noticed VyprVPN was a bit more expensive than its competitors. When you subscribe via their website, you can protect up to 30 devices simultaneously, which is much more than the cap of 5-10 that most VPN services have.

When I first got online in my home country, I was slightly disappointed with the speed. A VPN will always reduce your internet speed for it to work, but the question is, how much?

With a 1GB internet connection and using the default settings, my internet speed was throttled to just 45Mbps! When I switched to their WireGuard protocols, I could get speeds between 350-450Mbps. While this is acceptable, it's much slower than many other VPN services.

Still, VyprVPN stands out with its Chameleon protocols. This allows it to work in countries like China, with technology to block VPNs.

So, when you travel to China with most VPNs and can't get online, VyprVPN will work for you.

VyprVPN Key Features

VyprVPN is a Swiss-based service operated by the same corporate group as Giganews. Key features include:

  • 700+ servers in 70+ locations in 60+ countries
  • Servers outside of North America and Europe in Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, Africa, and Oceania
  • Connect up to 30 devices on a single subscription via the website (only 5 devices if you sign up via the Android or iOS app)
  • WireGuard protocols to optimize performance
  • Dedicated apps for VyprVPN download on more devices, including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, routers, and Smart TVs

Cost of VyprVPN

VyprVPN stands out as one of the more expensive VPN services on the market, though there are reasons for that.

Vypr owns and operates all its servers rather than relying on third parties. This adds security but also expense.

Their current monthly fee for the service is $15, which is more than the $12-$13 that most VPN providers share for a one-off monthly subscription.

If you sign up for an annual subscription, it'll cost you $100 for the year, which works at $8.33 per month. That's much more than other services of $4-$6 per month for longer subscriptions.

You can often find offers and deals allowing you to get VyprVPN for just $9 for your first month and $4.50 per month when you sign up for a year.

They only accept payment via card or PayPal and don't allow cryptocurrency payments.

There's no free version of VyprVPN, though you get a 30-day money-back guarantee when you sign up for a year.

But, most experts recommend that you avoid free VPNs. Usually, limited VPNs are designed to get you to sign up for the premium service or scams that sell your data to third parties.

Benefits and Drawbacks of VyprVPN

The main benefits of VyprVPN are that they're one of the most trustworthy VPN services for protecting your data.

In addition to being located in a country with strict data privacy laws and a verified no-logs policy, Vypr has many security features to protect you.

This includes standard features such as a kill switch and unique features such as Perfect Forward Security. This gives you a different security key for each connection. So, even if an attacker obtains your password, they can only access your data from a single session, not future sessions.

Another main benefit of VyprVPN, especially for travelers, is their Chameleon protocol, which allows the VPN to bypass technology that detects and blocks VPNs. This makes it easier to get online in VPN-unfriendly countries like China.

The main drawbacks of VyprVPN are its high price and slow speeds. This is why VyprVPN is a good choice only for individuals traveling to locations where VPNs are often blocked.

As a side note to this, when tested, VyprVPN successfully unblocked BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney Plus. But it wasn't able to unblock Netflix USA.

What People Are Saying About VyprVPN

The VyprVPN reviews are mixed, with some stating that its service has declined over the years.

While some users have been impressed with the customer service, ease of use, and security features VyprVPN offers, there are complaints about very slow speeds and high prices. Even more so when compared to other services that these users have tried.

Is VPNVyper Worth it?

VyprVPN is worth the investment if you're traveling to countries where VPNs are blocked and restricted.

On the other hand, if you're looking for a general VPN for use at home and while traveling in more open countries, other more affordable services offer better speeds.

Our Rating: 2.9/5

Pros:

  • Highly trustworthy
  • Protects customer data in multiple ways
  • Works in countries where VPNs are restricted

Cons:

  • More expensive than many market competitors
  • Offers much slower internet speeds than many market competitors
