Surviving the week and getting everything done can be supremely stressful, so kudos to you! If you’ve decided to reward yourself with a weekend trip, I’ve got your back with what to pack.

Whether you plan on traveling solo or with your girlies, read on to find the perfect travel checklist for what to take with you on your weekend trip. I’ve added various scenarios to help you out, so you’ll be prepared for a summer, winter, or beach getaway!

Packing List for a Weekend Trip: The Essentials

While packing for a weekend trip, it’s best not to overpack! I’d look up exactly where I’m going, what the place already has, and the minimal luggage I’ll need to get by. Considering you’ll only be going for a short time, it helps to be specific about what to take.

Of course, it’s crucial to bring the necessities with you. Some items are essential regardless of the destination, season, or activities you’ll be doing.

Many of these “essentials” are personal preferences, so this list is just to give you an idea. Feel free to customize it to your own needs!

Aside from destination-appropriate clothing, here are my top travel essentials for a weekend trip:

Must-Haves

  • ID & relevant documents
  • Phone charger
  • Headphones
  • Travel pillow
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Medication
  • First aid kit

Toiletries

  • Razor & shaving cream
  • Hairbrush
  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Sunscreen
  • Lotion
  • Chapstick
  • Deodorant
  • Feminine hygiene products

Cosmetics & Accessories

  • Contacts/glasses
  • Hair ties
  • Makeup & makeup remover
  • Perfume
  • Masks

Checklist for a Weekend Trip to the Beach

If you’re headed to the beach to soak up some sun, you won’t need to pack much! A couple of swimsuits and some sunscreen will do the trick. Here’s a longer version of what I’d pack in case you want to print it out and check off items as you put them in your suitcase:

  • Shorts
  • T-Shirts & tank tops
  • Pajamas
  • Jacket
  • Swimsuits
  • Swim Cover-ups
  • Underwear & bras
  • Sandals or flip flops
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat
  • Beach bag

Travel Checklist for a Weekend Trip in Summer

Summer makes for the perfect weather to be on the go. It also means lighter clothes like tank tops and camis, which are much easier to pack than bulky winter wear.

So, if you’re packing for a summer weekend trip, here are some of the most important things to take along with you!

  • Beachwear
  • Casual tops and shirts
  • Shorts or skirts
  • Summer dresses
  • Sandals or flip flops
  • Walking shoes (like a comfy pair of sneakers)
  • Loungewear
  • Casual purse or backpack
  • Undergarments and socks

For a weekend camping trip, be sure also to bring insect repellent to keep those pesky summer bugs away. Or, if you’re planning a night out on the town, throw in a nice dress and a pair of heels too!

Packing List for a Weekend Trip in Winter

Winter wear can be challenging to pack, considering they take up more luggage room. But don’t worry. I’ve included the least amount of stuff you could need for the weekend. With these winter essentials, you’ll be prepared for whatever the cold throws your way!

  • Long underwear or nylon tights
  • Weather-proof shoes or boots
  • Casual purse or backpack
  • Light, long-sleeved tops
  • Sweaters
  • Undershirts & undergarments
  • Down jacket
  • Long-sleeved pajama set
  • Jeans or fleece-lined leggings
  • Gloves and boot warmers
  • Scarf
  • Earmuffs
  • Beanies or wool hats
  • Warm, thick socks (Merino wool is a great option)

Packing a Backpack for a Weekend Trip

What if you’re going to be backpacking through some neighboring countries, you ask? I’ve got you. If you’re only taking a backpack, here’s what you should pack so that you’ll have everything you need!

Things to Avoid Packing for a Weekend Trip

Overpacking is the worst part of planning for a weekend trip. So, be mindful of everything you decide to pack. Whatever you take should serve a purpose. Avoid packing an item if you feel like you can do without it for two days.

A smart way to go about this is to place everything you think you’ll need on your bed or the floor. Once you’ve got it all, start narrowing down the items until you have just the bare basics left to take with you.

Channel your inner Marie Kondo, and you’ll be good to go!
