Whether you're a novice or an expert digital nomad, you know that you have to make enough to support yourself while you travel. There's no set way to do this, but one way you can explore is by freelancing. You could do this part-time or full-time as a way to earn commission to pay for your travels.

While freelancing is a great way to try and earn some extra cash, it's not something you can jump into and expect to succeed at right away.

One way to get started is to look for part-time remote work on a dedicated website for gigs. There are several out there, like WeWorkRemotely and RemoteOK, but one big name in the game is Fiverr. Should you look into using Fiverr for your digital nomad ventures? Let's find out!

What is Fiverr?

Fiverr is an online platform that allows freelancers to connect with people or businesses looking to hire services. Freelancers, who are called sellers on the website, can advertise their services, and buyers will reach out when they are interested in hiring for a gig. Fiverr also has an app available on the Apple and Google Play Store.

How do you join Fiverr?

In order to use Fiverr as a freelancer, you'll first need to sign up for their services. It's free to sign up, but accounts are set up as buyer accounts by default.

If you want to become a seller, you need to log in via desktop, select "join," and follow the steps to create an account. Once your account is active, select your profile icon in the upper right-hand corner, and drop down to "become a seller." Follow their onboarding process, and you'll be ready to start selling!

For detailed step-by-step instructions, Fiverr has listed them here.

How does Fiverr work?

Fiverr is a marketplace where you advertise your services, and buyers select you for their needs. If they're interested in the gigs you offer, they may ask you some questions to check if you're the right fit. Once you're selected, you deliver the work requested, and then you receive payment.

As a seller, you'll advertise your gigs within specific categories so buyers can look you up within those categories. Each category also has several subcategories, so you can be sure you're selling your gigs properly. Fiverr has more than 300 categories, but I've listed some of the major categories here.

Fiverr Job Categories

  • Digital Marketing
  • Graphics & Design
  • Writing & Translation
  • Music & Audio
  • Video & Animation
  • Programming & Tech
  • Lifestyle

You can be as specific as you want when listing your gigs, and as you create work, you'll receive reviews. The more positive reviews you get, the more likely it is that future buyers will use your services!

How do you get paid with Fiverr?

The big question! You want to make sure you're getting paid for your services if you're going to be freelancing. With Fiverr, buyers pay Fiverr in advance, and once you successfully complete the service, they release the funds. Sellers receive 80% of the total order value, so Fiverr does take a percentage of the commission.

After completing a gig, the funds go through a 14-day clearing period. After this time, they will be available for withdrawal.

You can withdraw your funds using a few different methods. Fiverr allows withdrawal through PayPal, a Fiverr Revenue Card, or direct deposit, although this option is only available in the US. You can withdraw earnings in the following currencies:

  • USD ($)
  • Euro (€)
  • British Pound (£)
  • Australian Dollar (A$)
  • Canadian Dollar (C$)
  • Israeli Shekel (₪)

Fiverr vs. Upwork

While Fiverr is a popular website for freelancers and digital nomads, it isn't the only one out there. Another well-known online platform is Upwork. What sets these two services apart from each other?

The biggest difference between the two services is that Fiverr is designed for one-off services, while Upwork leans more into long-term work. This informs the way that you advertise your services.

You can categorize your gigs on Fiverr to target specific audiences, whereas Upwork allows you to advertise yourself in a CV-style format. This also means that with Fiverr, your work is front and center, whereas Upwork focuses more on displaying your work via writing first.

Similarly to Fiverr, Upwork also takes 20% but only on earnings up to $500. If you're earning between $500-$10,000, Upwork takes 10%, and anything over $10,000 incurs a 5% service fee. Upwork also has the same withdrawal methods as Fiverr, and you can set how often you'd like your funds to be deposited.

With Upwork, you can apply directly for a job that interests you and also have clients invite you. With Fiverr, buyers approach sellers. This means that Upwork is more of a two-way street between freelancers and businesses.

Additionally, you can set your own rates per hour on Upwork, whereas Fiverr operates solely on a flat rate basis.

Fiverr Reviews

Before you decide to use Fiverr, it's useful to know how other freelancers feel about it. Many sellers have had positive experiences using Fiverr, but have stated that it depends on the clients they get. As it is an online service, you have to be cautious about the clients you accept work from and their legitimacy.

As with any online freelance service, there are thousands of other people already signed up with similar skill sets to you. This means that there's no guarantee of work or that you'll earn a living via Fiverr. The level of work you may receive is inconsistent, and this can be reflected in your paychecks.

That being said, sellers have said that Fiverr is easy to use, both in terms of getting gigs and getting paid.

Is Fiverr worth it?

Whether you're just starting out as a digital nomad or have been perfecting the skill for ages, it's worth checking out Fiverr.

Since it's free to join, there's minimal downside to joining, but you do have to be aware that work can be inconsistent. Unless you have a niche skill or know that you will have consistent clients asking for your work, you shouldn't rely solely on Fiverr as a way to fund everything.

Even with potential inconsistencies, Fiverr is worthwhile for getting started with remote work. You may just have to be consistent with putting out gigs you're willing to do and getting as many reviews as you can to attract more buyers.
