Just because you’re out traveling doesn’t mean you won’t want to catch up on your favorite shows! Whether you’re taking a rest day to binge watch, or catching up on your commute, accessing streaming services is part of our daily lives.
Ever since I can remember streaming services, Netflix has been number one. However, Netflix’s decision to crack down on password sharing by requiring you to connect to a “home wifi” regularly has not been met nicely. This particularly impacts people who often travel, especially digital nomads.
In combination with Netflix’s habit of canceling fan favorites, some users have decided it’s time to look elsewhere. If you’ve been thinking about ditching Netflix, let’s look at alternatives that’ll work better during your travels.

What Are the Alternatives to Netflix?
Netflix is only one of the many streaming services available today. Depending on what you want to watch, there are lots of options out there. So, here are the best alternatives to Netflix:
1. Disney+
Even if you’re not a Disney fan, Disney+ has something for everyone. After acquiring Marvel, Star Wars, and other big names, Disney’s catalog rivals its competitors.
When you travel, you’ll receive a pop-up notifying you that your selection will differ from home. Other than that, you won’t encounter any other problems with using Disney+ while traveling.
Disney+ has several different plans, with the lowest cost starting at $7.99 monthly. This basic plan does come with ads on some shows.
Whether you’re getting ready for a Disney World trip or wanting to relive the Disney Channel days, you’ll find many fantastic options on Disney+.
Here are the shows and movies you can always enjoy on Disney+:
- Marvel films
- Star Wars
- Hamilton the Musical
- All Disney films
- All Disney Channel series
- Disney animated classics
Disney+ Pros
- Large content catalog
- Available in regions globally
- Plans at different price points
- Budget-friendly plans
Disney+ Cons
- The basic plan includes ads

2. Amazon Prime Video
If you’re already a Prime user, you can continue using video streaming wherever you travel. While some of their content comes with ads, you can easily skip them with no waiting period.
Important note: Even though you can stream from anywhere worldwide, your other Prime benefits are associated with the country where you set up your account.
Streaming content will vary based on where you’re currently located. Amazon Originals will always be available, but other content is not guaranteed.
If you’re a student, you’ll receive a discount when signing up for Prime Student! You’ll get Prime at half price after your free trial, which is $7.49 monthly.
The content you can enjoy on Amazon Prime includes:
- The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
- Good Omens
- The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Amazon Prime Video Pros
- Amazon Prime benefits
- Budget-friendly student rate
- Available in regions globally
Amazon Prime Video Cons
- Some content has ads
- Amazon Prime benefits are not available internationally
- Non-student rate is less budget-friendly

3. Apple TV
For Apple device users, Apple TV comes ready to use on your device. For $6.99 a month, you have unlimited access to all of their content, including the famous Ted Lasso series. You can get a seven-day free trial before signing up for a paid program.
Since most of Apple TV’s content is original, you won’t have many limitations in availability when you travel. That said, Apple TV has the least amount of content compared to other streaming services.
Apple TV includes content such as:
- Ted Lasso
- Schmigadoon!
Apple TV Pros:
- Budget-friendly
- Available in regions globally
Apple TV Cons:
- Limited catalog
- Works best on Apple devices

4. HBO Max
HBO Max is a high-ranking Netflix alternative with a wide variety of content. Plans start at $9.99 a month, and you’ll be able to stay current on all the latest shows.
Unfortunately, HBO Max is restricted location-wise. While it’s available in many locations, it’s not available everywhere. Big European countries like the UK and Germany, as well as Australia and New Zealand, can’t access HBO Max.
If you’re traveling in an area without HBO Max but still want to watch it, you can use a VPN. Using one like NordVPN will allow you to access HBO Max content anywhere in the world!
HBO Max provides excellent TV shows and movies like:
- Game of Thrones
- Succession
- The White Lotus
- Gossip Girl
HBO Max Pros
- Large catalog of content
- The base plan is under $10 a month
HBO Max Cons
- Not available everywhere

Free Alternatives to Netflix
Streaming services aren’t always budget-friendly, and if you travel a lot, you might not get your money’s worth. If you still want to keep streaming, some free options exist!
1. Tubi
Tubi is a free streaming service with big-name movies and TV shows. This platform can keep its content free by monetizing ads, so you won’t be able to watch ad-free content.
Unfortunately, Tubi isn’t available worldwide. You can access it in the following countries:
- USA
- Canada
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Mexico
- Costa Rica
- Ecuador
- El Salvador
- Guatemala
- Panama

2. Crackle TV
Crackle TV is another free alternative to Netflix, only available in the US and its territories. Its content includes big Hollywood movies and popular TV shows. As streaming is free, you must watch ads with your movies or shows.

3. YouTube
While you won’t get an expansive catalog like Netflix, Youtube has some free streaming options. Watch compilation videos or follow other travelers’ adventures like Lost LeBlanc. With nothing but an internet connection, you can watch to your heart’s content!

What's My Choice as an Alternative to Netflix?
If you travel a lot, Netflix’s new policies could prevent you from using it while abroad. To continue with being able to stream, the best option currently out there is Disney+.
While the basic plan comes with ads, you can upgrade to a plan with no ads for $10.99 monthly. Budget-friendly with a wide variety of content, Disney+ will tick the boxes and deliver tons of entertainment.
The biggest perk to Disney+ is that you can easily stream it while you travel. While it’s not available in every country, it’s widely accessible in most regions globally. Your streaming ability won’t be impacted by travel longer than 30 days.
If you’ll be in one of its supported regions, HBO Max is also a good alternative. It has an extensive catalog of content, including popular series and films. You’ll get your money’s worth with it having a similar price point to Disney+.
The only drawback to HBO Max is its being geo-blocked in some locations. I enjoyed having HBO Max in the US, but now that I live in the UK, I can’t access the content easily. While VPNs are great, it is an additional monthly cost.
