But perhaps you're already a long-time digital nomad. In this case, learning about new platforms is the best way to keep expanding your client base.

There are so many platforms you can use to find your ideal clients. Some of the most popular are RemoteOkFiverr,  WeWorkRemotely, and Upwork. All these platforms allow you to search for appropriate jobs and bid on them by submitting a proposal.

So is PeoplePerHour the next platform to add to your arsenal of client-finding tools? Or is it an excellent stepping-stone to kick off your remote work journey?

What is PeoplePerHour?

PeoplePerHour is a freelancing platform that helps businesses and individuals connect with remote workers for various projects and tasks. As a freelancer, you can work on a per project or an hourly basis.

Companies can post their project requirements on the site. Then freelancers bid on the projects they're interested in and qualified for.

When a project is awarded to a freelancer, you have a set amount of time to complete the work and submit it to the client for approval. Once the client is happy with the work, they release payment to the freelancer through PeoplePerHour's escrow system.

Thanks to PeoplePerHour's escrow account, you don't have to worry about a client not paying. PeoplePerHour takes a small percentage of each transaction as a service fee.

You also don't have to wait for the perfect job to come along. You can post your own offers! Offers are pre-set bundles of tasks or projects.

For example, if you are a content writer, you can post different types of writing projects. This is an excellent way for clients to test out what it's like to work with a new freelancer. And for freelancers, it's a great way to showcase your abilities while streamlining the client onboarding process.

How do you get started on PeoplePerHour

Getting started is very straightforward. You can also set your rates, so you're in control of how much you earn.

There's a vast range of jobs available on the site, so you're sure to find something that suits your skill set. Payment is quick and easy, so you can start earning money right away!

Complete an online application

To get started, you need to complete an online application to become a PeoplePerHour freelancer. This may sound daunting, but it's a great way to ensure that only qualified freelancers are on the platform. PeoplePerHour's moderation team personally reviews all applications, so this step may take a few business days.

Create a comprehensive profile

As soon as your profile is approved, you can start bidding for jobs. It would be best if you made your profile as complete as possible so potential clients will feel they can trust you.

Clients will browse several profiles when deciding who to work with on a project. So elaborate on your career experience and your unique skills. Think of your profile as your virtual storefront.

AI job matching

PeoplePerHour makes it easy to get jobs by using their artificial intelligence system to match you to the most suitable projects based on your profile and abilities. If you think a project could be a good match, you submit a proposal. You can send 15 proposals for free per month. But if you want to send out more, you can buy more credits to do so.

Create offers

At the same time, you can create offers to show off your custom services so that clients can browse your offers like a catalog.

As you build your skills, improve your processes and get more client reviews, attracting new clients will become easier. Ultimately, you can scale your services and move from supplementing your income to potentially replacing your 9-5 job.

What are the fees on PeoplePerHour?

Fees on PeoplePerHour are very reasonable, given that you don't need to spend anything on your marketing or other elements that usually come with freelancing. This makes the site especially appealing to digital nomads looking for ways to supplement their income or create a full-time living from working online!

The type of fees that you can expect may differ slightly based on the total project amount. But this is the fee structure you can expect:

  • Project earnings below $700 (per client), PeoplePerHour charges a 20% service fee excluding VAT
  • Earnings between $700-$7,000 (per client) lead to a service charge of 7.5% including VAT
  • Earnings more than $7,000 (per client) lead to a service charge of 3.5% including VAT

The above service fees don't include VAT, which is remitted to the government. However, depending on where you are a tax resident, the actual percentage of VAT will differ.

Is PeoplePerHour worth it?

PeoplePerHour is a great way to get your foot in the door to start working remotely or even just to make a side income. While the cut they take on your work might feel like a lot, you're saving time and money on other elements such as:

  • creating your own website
  • Marketing
  • All the other admin that comes with freelancing

A major downside to PeoplePerHour is the lack of support the site provides to users. If you're an employer looking to hire a freelancer, beware of scammers. There have been many complaints of scammers from users on sitejabber and trustpilot. As a freelancer, keep this in mind when creating your profile to increase your chances of standing out.

Scammers aside, platforms such as PeoplePerHour are an excellent way for new freelancers to start their careers. They allow you to build up a portfolio that you can then use to target clients directly. However, it's not to say that you can't remain on the platform. There are plenty of experienced freelancers who still take clients exclusively from these sites.
